HOW TO IMPLEMENT IN TEACHING
Basically teaching English vocabulary teaching techniques are based on the shape and meaning of the vocabulary. It can be inferred as my table adaptation of the Nation (1974-18-21) below:
Teaching the form of a word Teaching the meaning of a word
Visually • By showing the written form of the word
• By showing the movements involved in saying the word
• By showing hand movements that draw the letters of the word in the air
• By showing wooden or plastic letters that spell the word Demonstration • By showing an object or
a cutout figure
• By gestures
• By performing an action
Tactilely • By using letters made of wood, cardboard, sandpaper, and so on, so the learners can feel the shapes of the letters that make up the word
• By using the system of writing like Braille (the writing for the blind)
• By writing the word, letter by letter, on the learner’s hand Pictures • By using photographs, blackboard drawings, illustration cut from magazines or newspapers
Aurally • By saying the word
• By producing the word in morse code or some other aural code Explanation • By description
• By giving synonyms or opposites
• By putting the word into a defining context
• By translating
From the table above, we can understand that there are two techniques of teaching vocabulary.
1. Techniques of teaching vocabulary form.
In the form of teaching vocabulary, there are at least three ways:
a. Visually
This visually teaches vocabulary can be done by showing the written form of the word, showing motion with respect to the word mentioned, by moving hands in the air as he wrote the letters, or by showing the letters are made of wood or plastic to spelled.
b. With a Touch
Teach vocabulary by touch (tactilely) can be done by using the letters are made of wood, sand paper, etc., So that students can feel the shape of the letters are arranged into words. It also can use a writing system for the blind such as Braille, or by writing the word letter by letter on the hands of students.
c. With oral
Teach oral vocabulary can be practiced like to say a word or other oral forms.
2. Meaning of vocabulary teaching techniques
In practice even this technique are at least three techniques that can be used as a reference:
a. Demonstration
this technique can be done by showing an object.
b. Image
this technique can be done with photos, draw something on the board, or illustrations from newspapers and magazines.
c. Explanations
this technique can be practiced with synonyms or antonyms explain the word, define it, or translate it.
